Watch: Firoz Cachalia sworn in as acting minister of police
Veteran legal scholar and public servant Prof Firoz Cachalia officially takes the reins at the Ministry of Police amid renewed efforts to reform South Africa’s criminal justice system.
Prof Firoz Cachalia was officially sworn in as the acting minister of police during a ceremony held this morning at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
His appointment follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s July 13 announcement of his intention to appoint Cachalia to the role, in line with section 91(3)(c) of the Constitution.
Cachalia, a respected figure in the fields of law, governance and public service, steps into the position at a pivotal moment for the country’s criminal justice system. With high crime rates and public safety concerns on the rise, the new acting minister is expected to bring both stability and reform to the portfolio.
In his first remarks after taking office, Cachalia reaffirmed his commitment to constitutional values and pledged to support members of the SAPS while working closely with civil society and other stakeholders to tackle crime and improve public safety.
The Ministry of Police expressed confidence in his leadership and reiterated its goal of fostering collaboration across all sectors to build safer communities and a more just South Africa.
