‘Attempted hit’ in Boksburg believed to be linked to Madlanga Commission

A man, allegedly named by a previous witness at the Madlanga Commission, hid under his bakkie to escape a hail of bullets from the occupants of a white Toyota Vitz.

Gauteng Provincial SAPS commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni is on the scene in Van Dyk Park, Boksburg, following what is believed to have been an attempted hit on a resident linked to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

Boksburg Advertiser reported from the scene that the Klapper Street resident narrowly escaped the apparent hit after coming under fire outside his home.

A reliable source told Boksburg Advertiser on the scene that the victim was named by a previous witness at the Madlanga Commission, relating to an ongoing IPID investigation.

Residents told Boksburg Advertiser that the shooting happened at about 09:40.

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says the victim was about to drive into his property when occupants of a Toyota Vitz opened fire on him.

His car has 16 bullet holes, and he hid under the car to escape the gunfire, Nevhuhulwi says.

“They fired shots at him before driving away. The victim escaped unharmed. The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage.”

A case of attempted murder has been opened.

Witness murdered

In December, Marius van der Merwe, a Brenthurst, Brakpan, resident was gunned down in front of family. He was a Madlanga Commission witness and had previously survived other attempts on his life.

Brakpan Herald reported at the time that his mother-in-law, Lesley McLean, said Van der Merwe mentioned a few times that he was scared for his life.

“His words were: ‘I have done what I have to do, but I know I’m going to get killed for it’,” said Lesley.
