Alexandra police are investigating three separate murders committed in seven days, with no arrests made in any of the cases, reports Alex News.

Alexandra Police Station Commander Brigadier Vusimuzi Ngubane confirmed that investigations are under way into the three killings between September 7 and 13.

A 34-year-old woman was fatally shot outside her home on the night of September 9 in the presence of her child. Ngubane said two men approached the property at about 21:00 and opened fire as soon as she came outside before fleeing.

Police have not yet established a motive, but Ngubane said early indications suggest the killing could be linked to illegal evictions, a persistent problem in Alexandra where groups forcibly occupy properties without a legal claim to them.

Fatal road-rage shooting blocks traffic

The second killing followed an apparent road-rage confrontation between the drivers of a white Polo and a Siyaya taxi.

Ngubane said the confrontation escalated into a tense stand-off, with both drivers refusing to yield right of way, switching off their vehicles and blocking traffic.

As the taxi eventually drove past, the Polo driver allegedly opened fire on the taxi driver, who was later pronounced dead at a local clinic.

Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) investigates fatal police shoot-out

The third investigation concerns the fatal shooting of a man during a police stop-and-search operation near Fourth Avenue and Alfred Nzo Street on September 13.

Ngubane said officers attempted to search a vehicle when an alleged exchange of gunfire broke out. A passenger fled on foot, while the driver allegedly opened fire on the officers before being fatally shot.

Police recovered a firearm and ammunition at the scene.

Ngubane said dockets for attempted murder, relating to shots allegedly fired at police, and murder, relating to the fatal police shooting, have been opened.

A murder docket is standard investigative procedure following fatal police shooting and an alleged exchange of fire. It does not in itself constitute a finding of criminal guilt against the officers involved.

The case has been referred to the IPID. National spokesperson Lizzy Suping confirmed that the matter is under investigation.

Enforcement results across broader crime categories

Carjacking remained comparatively low, with two cases reported during the period. However, Ngubane cautioned that hijackers in Alexandra continue to target e-hailing drivers to meet demand for stolen vehicles that extends beyond the township.

Police recorded stronger enforcement outcomes in assault cases. Of 15 common assault cases, police made nine arrests, while two further arrests followed 11 cases of grievous bodily harm.

Ngubane attributed the higher arrest rate to the fact that suspects and victims in assault cases are often known to each other, making suspects easier to identify and apprehend.

Two sexual offence cases remain under investigation. Suspects have been identified but have not yet been arrested.

Drug- and alcohol-related enforcement produced more arrests, with eight people arrested for drug offences and 13 for driving under the influence.

Police also arrested two suspects in connection with four house burglary and theft cases.

The week’s largest single enforcement action involved Immigration Act offences, with 44 undocumented migrants arrested.
