WATCH: Situation turns sour at milk distribution in Newcastle, KZN
The situation quickly turned sour when one of the residents became irate and produced what was thought to be a firearm and demanded his share.
The handout of free milk to residents in Lennoxton turned sour earlier today (Tuesday), Newcastle advertiser reports.
While hundreds of residents were lining up for their share of the 30 000 litres of milk, a man produced what was thought to be a firearm and demanded his share.
A scuffle ensued and the police were called to the scene.
It was later determined the firearm was a gas pistol, and its wielder was taken into police custody.
The milk was on offer following a milk truck overturning on the Amajuba Pass yesterday (October 8).
The company had decided to distribute the contents of the second and undamaged tanker to Newcastle residents.
A towing service on Boundary Road housed the tanker, and residents were encouraged to bring along their bottles to collect free milk.
Residents are still encouraged to take advantage, particularly non-profit and non-government organisations.
