Woman arrested for burying foetus in backyard
A woman has been arrested after she allegedly buried the remains of her six-month-old foetus she had aborted in her backyard in Canelands, near Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal.
Head of the local security company, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), Prem Balram said a call was received from an unknown person on Sunday night informing the controller on duty of a body buried in Canelands, near Verulam, Phoenix Sun reported.
Balram added that the caller, who declined to identify herself, further informed the controller the mother had wrapped the child in a blanket and placed the body in a hole behind the residence, which she then covered with mud.
Balram said reaction officers were dispatched to the Canelands area and managed to locate the vague address provided by the caller.
The mother was questioned, and she pointed out the blanket.
She had allegedly dug up the body after she got wind that officers were in the area searching for her house.
The woman was arrested by RUSA officers for concealment of birth.
It is believed the woman was six-months pregnant and had consumed homemade muti to abort the foetus.
Balram said the woman was silent during the arrest.
Investigations are ongoing.
On Friday, a woman (23) was arrested after giving birth and burying the body of her dead baby in her backyard in Soshanguve Block Y, Pretoria.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Lolo Mangena said the woman’s mother notified the police after her daughter told her she had dumped the baby in a nearby veld early this month.
“When her mother notified the police, investigations were conducted, and it was found she had buried her newborn daughter in the backyard,” added Mangena.
