Homeless Joseph Phukube starts new job
Joseph Phukube, 22, who was noticed on the streets by Sandton resident Pam Green, will be working at a call centre based in Centurion.
“He was very excited but nervous,” Green told Sandton Chronicle.
She said Phukube’s concerns were more on what he would wear, how he would get there and if he would make it on time. “He was worried about the little things we take for granted,” added Green.
Green said the company, Locomute, was a good place for Phukube to work at. “Thank you for everyone’s support and making the story go viral,” said Green. “I’ve been able to help more people since Joseph. It is good to be aware of how you can help others.”
Phukube had taken to the streets of Johannesburg with his matric certificate with the hope of finding a job. He received more than 1 000 replies and job offers after images of him went viral on social media.
Originally from Mpumalanga, Phukube was noticed by Green, who saw his matric certificate and CV and posted a picture of him on Facebook last month.
Green said she asked 20 of her friends to share the post to help Phukube find employment. Following the initial post on June 29, the post has been shared more than 22 500 times on Facebook.
Since then, Phukube has reportedly received more than 1 000 responses and job offers ranging from call centre agent positions to scholarship offers at various institutions. Phukube said his dream job was in marketing.
