Mpumalanga girl dragged from home, raped in field

Investigations are under way after a 15-year-old girl was abducted from her home on Glenwood Road and raped in a nearby field by three men in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, on Thursday.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Leonard Hlati said the three suspects have been arrested but have not yet been charged. In the meantime, they have been taken in for questioning, Lowvelder reported.

In a separate incident, four schoolgirls, aged between seven and nine, from Kutumela Molefi Primary School, east of Pretoria, were allegedly gang raped by four boys on the school premisesin the Lethabong informal settlement last month.

The father of one of the victims, 8, only became aware of this when he was informed by the school principal this week. The principal had apparently not reported the rapes to the police.

Education spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said the allegation that the school failed to act timeously in reporting the matter was disturbing.

“The policies of the department require the school to report such incidents to the department, police and medical professionals immediately,” she said.

Police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said charges had been laid by the eight-year-old’s father.
