Lamb Champs 2022 ignites and excites Pretoria
The search for South Africas tastiest lamb took place at Lamb Champs 2022 and the Northern Cape took top honours.
The Lamb Champs 2022 entertained Pretoria with a festive event hosted at Harlequin Rugby Club this year.
The event welcomed 50 farmers from all around South Africa and about 2000 guests to feast and enjoy while showing off the best meat in South Africa.
The annual event was held by farming organisations Saai and Buffelsfontein Brandewyn, who pulled out all the stops this year with an epic celebration of the farming community.
50 spitbraai stands and braai masters presented their best lamb for 10 judges.

The winner of the competition took home R50 000 and the Lamb champ title.
The criteria the meats are judged on range from texture and taste, to presentation and overall impression.
10 judges from all over South Africa gathered to taste 50 pieces of meat and decide on the winner.

“First, we wanted to determine how sheep farmers raise, fatten, neaten and cook their own lambs on their own acre in their own way.
“Secondly, we wanted to know how farming practices differ from farmer to farmer. “
And lastly, during a gala braai in the capital, we wanted to determine who produces the best lamb in the Republic,” said Meyer Le Roux, presenter of the program.

This year Nathan Naudé of Nitique Boerdery from the Northern Cape took home the R50 000 grand prize.
Gawie van Heerden of Consortium Merino from Dombietersfontein in the Northern Cape ended in second place and Hennie Jonker from Kroonstad in the Free State third.

“We as Nitique Boerdery and Karoo Treasures would like to say thanks for a wonderful day. It was a great experience for us.
“It is going to mean a lot for our marketing and it has created a wider network for us,” said Naudé.

Performances by Ichnus Wait, Juan Boucher and Adam Tas kept guests entertained and sponsors showed off their products and services while the meats cooked.

“What made this event so special was that we could introduce consumers to the farmer behind the store shelf. The farmers have put in a lot of effort, and lambs were entered from all over, including Carnarvon, Rietbron, Steynsrus, the Moordenaarskaroo, Utrecht and Groblersdal,” said Francois Rossouw, CEO of Saai.
