Explore the concept of ‘green’ vehicle parts

Discover how remanufacturing old parts can contribute to sustainability in the automotive industry.

In South Africa, the automotive aftermarket plays a pivotal role in the economy, embracing ‘circular economy’ practices, as highlighted by Attie Serfontein, national director of the Automotive Remanufacturers’ Association (Ara).

Automotive remanufacturing involves revitalising used vehicle parts instead of disposing of them, embodying the principles of a circular economy.

The Ara, affiliated with the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), champions remanufacturing in South Africa, establishing standards and fostering ethical trading practices.

“Remanufacturing breathes new life into used vehicle parts, extending their lifecycle and promoting sustainability. Embracing circular economy practices such as automotive component remanufacturing minimises waste, fosters job creation and drives sustainable development,” explains Serfontein.

The Ara advocates for the responsible reuse of remanufactured engine, driveline and brake components, prioritising environmental sustainability while delivering top-tier service and quality craftsmanship.

Contrasting with the wasteful linear economy, where vehicle parts are discarded and replaced with new ones, remanufacturing offers consumers affordable, high-quality alternatives. These parts often come at lower prices, making them an appealing choice for budget-conscious vehicle owners.

Furthermore, remanufactured parts typically come with warranties, ensuring consumers have peace of mind. Beyond cost-effectiveness, automotive remanufacturing contributes to environmental conservation by reducing greenhouse gas emissions through various means:

  • Diminished demand for raw materials, thus reducing energy consumption for sourcing and processing.
  • Lower energy requirements for manufacturing, as existing part cores are utilised.
  • Remanufacturing decreased waste generated during production and reduces carbon emissions during the remanufacturing process compared to traditional manufacturing methods.

“As leaders in the industry, the RMI and Ara must continue championing a circular economy through automotive remanufacturing, securing a sustainable future for generations to come,” Serfontein asserts.

Consumers can contribute to this endeavour by supporting remanufactured parts when purchasing vehicle components, promoting environmentally responsible choices.

“Incorporating remanufactured parts into your vehicle maintenance not only supports sustainability, but also aligns with the ethos of a circular economy. Let’s be proud ‘green’ consumers, driving towards a greener future,” Serfontein concludes.
