Seen in footage from a Calgary dealership (watch the video below), the possibility of the Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 gaining a V8 signals a major shift for Mercedes-AMG considering the Affalterbach marque’s move to equip the new C63 S – the performance sedan on which this CLE will be based – with a 2l, four-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The video, which shows a camouflaged CLE 63 undergoing high-altitude tests, has ignited a firestorm of speculation. While official details are scarce, whispers suggest Mercedes-AMG is leaning towards fitting the CLE 63 with a 4l twin-turbo V8, which will likely incorporate mild-hybrid technology to boost power and efficiency.

Currently, the Three-pointed Star brand’s CLE line-up offers the CLE 200 and CLE 300 4Matic, alongside the upcoming Mercedes-AMG CLE 53, which sports a 3l inline-six producing 330kW and 560N.m of torque (600N.m on over boost). Local pricing for the CLE 53, which we sampled on The Cape 1000 rally, is still under wraps, though.
