The revised hot hatch, now available to order in Japan, benefits from lessons learned through the brand’s participation in the Super Taikyu Series and Japanese Rally Championship. Visually, the updated GR Yaris receives a more aggressive look. There’s a new front lip spoiler, front fender vents, a ventilated aluminium bonnet and a reshaped rear bumper. A standout feature is the adjustable rear wing, designed to improve aerodynamics and stability without compromising everyday use.

Under the skin, Toyota focused on improving the driving experience. The brand’s Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission has been refined with faster shift timing, while the throttle response has been sharpened for more enthusiastic driving. For those who still prefer a manual, a six-speed option remains available.

To improve feel and handling, the automaker’s engineers have strengthened the chassis with new bolts, updated the suspension and tweaked the steering system. Much of this development was done with input from professional drivers, ensuring the GR Yaris remains engaging to drive on the road and the track.

One of the headline changes is the newly available Aero Performance Package. Previewed as a concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon earlier this year, the kit includes a vented bonnet, a larger front lip, fender ducts, underbody fuel tank covers and a more advanced rear wing. These additions are aimed at boosting downforce and cooling while keeping the car practical for daily use.

Inside, all versions now include Toyota’s Safety Sense suite of driver assistance systems, while a rally-style vertical handbrake is available across the range. The updated GR Yaris is priced from ¥3 560 000 (around R469 600) in Japan, with the range-topping RZ High-Performance model going for ¥5 330 000 (around R703 000). That model’s 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine produces 224kW and 400Nm, sent to all four wheels.

Toyota hasn’t yet confirmed availability outside Japan, but given the GR Yaris’ popularity, global announcements are likely to follow.
