Watch: Rescuers save puppy trapped in stormwater drain in Newcastle
A tense incident turned into one of hope when community members rallied to save a puppy stuck in a drain pipe.
A young puppy has been given a second chance at life after being rescued from a stormwater drain pipe in Kwamathukhuza, Newcastle, last weekend.
According to Newcastle Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) inspector, Jennavieve Tinkler, the puppy got trapped deep inside the pipe while battling a strong flow of water, reports Newcastle Advertiser.
“The pup was washed down the pipe and was spotted at multiple access points before eventually being rescued from the other side,” she says.

Quick-thinking hero
A girl named Zinhle Mdlalose reported the incident to the SPCA. Deeply concerned, she acted quickly, a decision that saved the puppy’s life.
Immediately after receiving the call, the SPCA contacted Newcastle Protection Services for assistance due to the safety risks and the need for secure access to the drain.
Tinkler praised Zinhle’s actions: “Zinhle, you are this tiny pup’s hero and our hero too. Your mother, Holly Mdlalose, has raised a caring, strong and responsible young woman. She must be incredibly proud, as are we.”
She also extends thanks to the Newcastle Fire Department for their ongoing support. “Without your expertise, professionalism and passion for animal welfare, we would not be able to carry out these rescues safely and efficiently,” she says.

Act now, worry later…
Tinkler further highlighted that this was receptionist Landi Knoetze’s first pipe rescue since joining the SPCA.
“She was understandably nervous about what might be inside the pipe, but she acted without hesitation and brought the puppy to safety. I am incredibly proud of her. As we always say during these rescues; get it done and worry later,” Tinkler adds.
Support your local SPCA
To help organisations like the SPCA continue their vital rescue work and fight animal cruelty, consider supporting your local branch. Donations of cash, pet food and blankets are always needed, or contact your nearest SPCA to find out what their most urgent needs are.
Without credible animal welfare organisations such as SPCAs, many vulnerable animals would be left without care, protection or a second chance at a better life.
