Find out what skin type your teen has and how to care for it

Understand how to help your teenager find the right products to develop a suitable skincare routine.

Hormonal shifts, increased sebum production and other factors that come with the transitional teen phase can cause havoc to their skin.

This is a crucial time to get to know their skin, understand what skin type they have and which gentle, clean products to use to get oiliness, acne and other common concerns under control.

Here are the primary skin types commonly seen in teenagers:

  1. Oily Skin: Typically characterized by excess sebum production, resulting in a shiny appearance, enlarged pores, and a predisposition to acne. To combat these concerns, teenagers with oily skin should opt for gentle cleansers that remove excess oil and impurities without stripping the skin’s natural moisture. Look for products containing gentle but effective natural ingredients like salicylic acid (derived from willow bark) or tea tree oil, as they can help control oil production and combat acne-causing bacteria.
  1. Dry Skin: Teenagers with dry skin often experience tightness, flakiness, and a lack of moisture. Gentle cleansers and moisturizers with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and squalane (which thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, can also help with acne and eczema) are beneficial for this skin type. Additionally, incorporating a weekly hydrating face mask or overnight moisturizing treatments can provide an extra boost of nourishment.
  1. Combination Skin:  An oily T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) and normal to dry skin on the cheeks is known as combination skin. A gentle foaming cleanser can effectively cleanse the T-zone, while a hydrating cleanser is ideal for the cheeks. Non-comedogenic moisturizers, which do not clog pores, are suitable for both areas. Teenagers with combination skin can also benefit from using a toner containing witch hazel or rosewater to help balance the skin’s pH levels.
  1. Sensitive Skin: This type of skin can react adversely to various skincare products, leading to redness, itching, or stinging sensations. Teenagers with sensitive skin should avoid harsh ingredients such as fragrances, sulfates, and alcohol. Look for gentle, fragrance-free products specifically formulated for sensitive skin. Products containing soothing ingredients like Aloe Vera, Chamomile, or Oat Extract can help calm and nourish sensitive skin without causing irritation.
