GWM confirms SA pricing for new P500 3.0TD bakkie

A more powerful diesel option gives GWM another weapon in its bid to challenge established names in South Africa’s fiercely contested double-cab market.

In its ‘Every bakkie confirmed for SA feature, Car Magazine highlighted several new bakkies and derivatives of existing models set to arrive in the South African market. Among them is a new 3.0l turbodiesel version of GWM’s local P500. Previewed at the 2026 Festival of Motoring and scheduled to launch in September, pricing has now been confirmed for the new P500 3.0TD.

The 3.0l four-cylinder turbodiesel produces 170kW and 620Nm of torque. This represents a 35kW increase in power and 170Nm more torque than the Chinese automaker’s 2.4l oil-burner, which is available in the P300, P500 and Tank 300. The larger-capacity unit is available with either a 4×2 or 4×4 drivetrain, both paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Pricing and line-up

The 3.0l P500 4×2 and 4×4 are exclusively available in Super Luxury and Ultra Luxury specifications, respectively. The 4×2 is priced from R724 900, while the 4×4 retails for R799 900. The latter matches the price of the 2.4T 4×4 Luxury and is R90 000 less than the 2.4T 4×4 Super Luxury.

Market rivals

With its 3.0l turbodiesel, the GWM P500 joins a small group of large-capacity double-cab turbodiesel bakkies on sale in the South African market. These include the Isuzu D-Max, Ford Ranger and VW Amarok. The 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel available in the D-Max produces 140kW and 450Nm, while the 3.0l V6 turbodiesel fitted to selected Ranger and Amarok models produces 184kW and 600Nm.
