Cherry Margarita with homemade spiced syrup

The tartness of the cherry juice balances the citrusy lime and sweet triple sec, while the spiced syrup adds warmth to this cocktail.

The margarita is a timeless cocktail known for its refreshing blend of tequila, lime, and triple sec, often accompanied by a salted rim.

While the classic margarita is a staple in many bars and homes, experimenting with different flavours can lead to delightful new experiences.

One such variation is the Spiced Cherry Margarita, a drink that combines the tartness of cherries, the warmth of spices, and the zing of tequila.

Ingredients

  • 50ml of good-quality blanco or reposado tequila.
  • 100ml tart cherry juice
  • 25ml freshly squeezed lime juice.
  • 20ml orange liqueur, such as Cointreau or Grand Marnier.
  • 15ml of homemade spiced syrup (recipe below).
  • Fresh cherries (for garnish)
  • Fresh mint (for grarnish)
  • Ice
  • Salt or Sugar (for rimming the glass)
  • A pinch of chilli powder

Spiced Syrup

Homemade spiced syrup is the star of this cocktail. The combination of cinnamon, star anise, cloves, and peppercorns infuses the drink with a warm, aromatic quality.

  • 100g granulated sugar.
  • 100ml water.
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 star anise
  • 5 cloves
  • 5 black peppercorns.

To make spiced syrup, combine the sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Add the spices and simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let it steep for an additional 15 minutes. Strain the syrup into a clean container and let it cool. This syrup can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Method

  1. Rim your glass with lime juice and dip it into salt or sugar mixed with a pinch of chilli powder.
  2. In a cocktail shaker, combine the tequila, cherry juice, lime juice, triple sec, spiced syrup, and a generous amount of ice. Shake vigorously for about 20 seconds.
  3. Strain the mixture into your prepared glass over fresh ice.
  4. Garnish with a fresh cherry or a slice of lime.

Pairing with Food

Pairing this cocktail with the right food can enhance the overall experience. Here are some suggestions:

  • Appetisers: Spicy nachos, guacamole, or a platter of assorted cheeses and fruits.
  • Main Course: Grilled meats, especially those with a bit of spice, like chipotle chicken or BBQ ribs.
  • Desserts: Chocolate-based desserts, like brownies or a rich chocolate cake, complement the cherry and spiced notes of the margarita.

Variations and Tips

Experimenting with variations can be fun and rewarding. Here are a few ideas:

  • Smoky Version: Use mezcal instead of tequila for a smoky twist.
  • Herbal Infusion: Add a sprig of rosemary, thyme or mint to the shaker for an herbal note.
  • Sparkling: Top the cocktail with a splash of sparkling water or soda for a fizzy version.
