2 arrested for murder of Ekurhuleni policeman

Both suspects were arrested at hospitals, one while seeking medical attention at a facility in Mpumalanga.

Two suspects, believed to have been involved in the killing of Captain Wynand du Toit in Ekurhuleni yesterday, have been arrested in Mpumalanga and Gauteng this morning.

Du Toit was wounded and passed away in the Life Springs Parkland Hospital after being involved in a shootout with four suspects in Geduld yesterday morning while trying to stop a robbery in progress.

Springs SAPS confirmed that one of the suspects was apprehended at Pholosong Hospital while another fled to Evander in Mpumalanga to seek medical attention for gunshot wounds believed to have been sustained during the shootout.

“He was pursued all the way to Evander where he was trying to escape,” says Springs SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala.

“The wounds aren’t serious.”

A memorial service for Du Toit will be held in the Springs Mall parking area today at 18:30.

The investigation is still ongoing.
