2024 general election date announced
If you have not registered to vote, do so urgently because registration will close once the date is published in the Government Gazette.
South Africans will get their chance to cast their votes on May 29 after the presidency announced the date for the 2024 general elections earlier tonight.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged all unregistered voters to use the online platform to register.
According to the Electoral Commission of South Africa, known as the IEC, voter registration will close at midnight on the day that the election date is proclaimed and published in the Government Gazette.
Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the proclamation to declare the date will be issued ‘in due course’.
In a statement, the presidency says the election date was determined after consultation with the IEC.
A meeting was also organised between the IEC and the premiers of all nine provinces, to discuss the readiness for the upcoming elections.
