Africa’s first 5-star rated green hospital finds home in Pretoria

About 200 experts are to be employed at the R470-million specialist surgical hospital which opened its doors in the green Menlyn Maine precinct in Pretoria last Tuesday.

The 11 000 square metre specialised surgical hospital was developed by Growthpoint Properties and compromises of seven levels, three clinical and consulting levels. It has a 100-bed and incorporates 15 consulting rooms and five theatres, including one hybrid theatre, which has the potential to increase the number to eight.

Growthpoint Properties spokesperson Mahlatse Bojanyane said the surgical hospital was dubbed Cintocare hospital and offered neuro and spinal surgeons, maxillofacial and oral surgeons, ear, nose and throat surgeons, plastic and reconstructive surgeons and a vascular surgeon, as well as specialist physicians, paediatricians and intensivists.

“Cintocare has opened in Pretoria, to become the first 5-star rated green hospital in Africa and only the fifth in the world with its specialised surgical mix and clinical business model.”

Bojanyane said Cintocare hospital was tailor-made as a high-performance clinical centre of excellence focused exclusively on head, neck, spinal and vascular surgery.

She said construction to the specialist surgical hospital began in July 2018 and despite the Covid-19 lockdown, was completed on time at the end of 2020.

“The hospital is the culmination of the close collaboration between its operators, doctors, promoters, developers, owners and other stakeholders.”

Development manager for Growthpoint, Michiel Gerber said: “The hospital is the first of its kind in many aspects.

“It is Africa’s first certified green hospital, and Cintocare incorporated numerous sustainable design and management features and earned a five green star custom healthcare design certification from the Green Building Council South Africa.”

Gerber said healthcare facilities with green design had been found to deliver 15% faster recovery rates, a 22% reduction in need for pain medication, an 11% reduction in secondary infections, and an 8.5% reduction in hospital stays.

“Cintocare is also South Africa’s first hospital to generate its own oxygen on demand using an installed pressure swing adsorption plant.”

Growthpoint Properties SA CEO Estienne de Klerk said that the hospital’s medical professionals were also supported by state-of-the-art equipment and technology.

Cintocare spokesperson Ineke Jonker said the hospital had plans to assist the many residents who were not able to afford private medical care.

Jonker said Cintocare was already in work with organisations such as Good Morning Angels, Atterbury Trust, Smile Foundation and the Blissful Cleft Foundation.
