The City of Ekurhuleni’s Office of the Speaker confirmed receiving a motion of no confidence brought forward against Executive Mayor Tania Campbell.

On October 12, the motion was submitted by the ANC Caucus in council. It will be debated at the ordinary council meeting on October 26.

The motion of no confidence in the city comes just over a month after one was brought forward by the ANC in the City of Johannesburg.

Spokesperson for the Speaker, Lulama Mankabane, said the city’s standing orders by-law provides rules and criteria on the nature, form and notice period of motions, to which all parties must comply.

“The programming committee, which is representative of all parties in council, determines the business of the council in accordance with these rules,” said Mankabane.

“Except when the rules permit otherwise or when the Speaker has given consent, each motion must be considered by the programming committee for admission onto the council agenda.”

Mankabane said the programming committee will determine the admissibility of the motion based on the criteria provided per the standing rules of council.

“To ensure the integrity of the process where all parties and councillors have an opportunity to participate in the work of the council in line with the constitutional dispensation, the Speaker will not provide any further comment on the process,” said Mankabane

Mankabane said once the programming committee had resolved on the motion and business of council the office of the speaker would provide further information.
