Armed robbers storm Gateway jewellery shop in Durban
The getaway vehicle was found abandoned on the M25 highway.
ARMED suspects stormed a jewellery shop in uMhlanga’s Gateway Theatre of Shopping this morning (15 January) at about 8.35am.
Tyron Powell of Marshall Security said shots were fired during the robbery.
“We received multiple panic signals from neighbouring shops and some calls saying there was a robbery in progress and shots had been fired. When we got there our officers gathered information on the suspects and we got a description of the suspect’s vehicle. It didn’t have tracker but together with Tracker SA we recovered the vehicle which was abandoned on the M25 highway,” said Powell.

“Our officers are on scene trying to ascertain if the vehicle was stolen and what items were stolen from the jewellers,” said Powell.
Michelle Shelley, marketing manager for Gateway Theatre of Shopping, confirmed the incident.

“No tenants or customers were harmed during the incident. The centre’s security teams immediately responded to the scene and the South African Police Services (SAPS) were notified, and responded to the scene soon after. The perpetrators made off with an undisclosed amount of goods. The safety and security of customers and tenants are of utmost importance and we are working with the SAPS to assist with their investigation. The centre has been secured and is operating and trading as normal, as per lockdown regulations,” she said.
SAPS did not send their comment at the time this article was published.
