Cancellation of bail denied – Man who allegedly set girlfriend on fire

His ex-girlfriend alleged that he continued to contact her but the court found there was not enough evidence to prove her version.

The case of a Sandton man facing seven counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, including allegedly setting his then-girlfriend on fire, will go to trial in April.

The man, whose name is known to the Sandton Chronicle but will not be published until he has pleaded, has been charged regarding incidents in Kelvin, Sandton from 2016 to 2018.

These included alleged physical abuse as well as dousing his girlfriend in ethanol and setting her on fire.

The man appeared at Randburg Magistrate’s Court on March 16 after his ex-girlfriend applied to cancel his bail, alleging he had continued to contact and threaten her.

The presiding officer, however, said there was insufficient evidence to warrant the cancellation of bail.

The case has been postponed to April 29 for plea and trial.
