Durban Car Terminal shatters handling record in a consecutive run

The Durban Car Terminal has broken its handling record for two years consecutively, with exports and transhipments playing a key role in the latest run.

The terminal handled over 526 000 fully built units (FBUs) against a target of 487 000 FBUs during the 2019/2020 financial year – a 7% increase year on year.

There was an additional 13 000 units in transhipments while export targets were exceeded by about 10 000 units.

Terminal Manager Phumi Blose commended the team for achieving yet another record-breaking performance.

“The latest performance is very encouraging, considering the challenging global economic conditions that have resulted in a recession. This is yet another illustration of what a co-ordinated approach to planning and execution can achieve,” she said.

“Adhering to compliance and maintaining a safe working environment are everything in the protection of human capital and while we were challenged during the rollout of training – the outcome speaks for itself,” said Blose.

She added that it was especially impressive how the terminal had turned the tide in terms of performance, having failed to achieve its target a mere three years ago to achieving back-to-back record performances.
