Durban police officer wounded in shoot-out

A Berea police officer was wounded following a shoot-out between two suspects and police in Morningside, Durban, on Thursday morning.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant PN Naidoo said officers patrolling the area were stopped by a jogger, who informed them of a suspicious vehicle that was parked nearby, Rising Sun Overportreported.

“The officers made their way to inspect the vehicle and noticed that it was stationary,” Naidoo said.

He added the officers noticed men dressed in blue overalls outside a silver VW Polo with no registration plate.

“The officers pulled up behind the vehicle, where the driver rushed back to his vehicle and pulled out a firearm, firing shots at the police officer,” said Naidoo.

Naidoo confirmed one of the officers had been injured in the shoot-out.

Police then chased the suspects’ vehicle, but the suspects managed to evade arrest.

In a similar incident, a police officer was shot and injured during a cash-in-transit robbery in Randburg, north of Johannesburg, in October last year.

It was alleged the officer was shot in the back of his neck after four or five shots had been fired.
