Father and son dead in suspected murder-suicide in Ekurhuleni
Authorities are urging families to seek help early as investigations continue into a tragic shooting that left two family members dead.
Norkem Park SAPS in Ekurhuleni has launched an investigation into a case of murder and inquest following a suspected domestic violence-related incident that occurred in the early hours this morning.
Kempton Express reports that, according to preliminary police information, the incident took place at around 01:30 on Emberen Street.
“It is alleged that a father fatally shot his 20-year-old son before turning the firearm on himself,” says Norkem Park SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant DP Mkhondo.
She added that the family’s 16-year-old son reportedly managed to escape from the house during the shooting.
“It is further alleged that the suspect set two vehicles parked in the garage on fire before taking his own life.”
Emergency services were summoned to the scene and declared both the father and his son dead.
Norkem Park SAPS station commander Colonel Nelly Maunatlala urged members of the public to seek help if they are experiencing domestic conflict or abuse before it escalates into tragedy.
“We encourage anyone facing domestic violence to reach out for help. Support and intervention are available,” says Maunatlala.
Victims of domestic violence can contact their nearest police station’s Victim Empowerment Centre, local social workers or the Gender-Based Violence Command Centre at 0800 428 428 for immediate assistance.
Police investigations continue.
