Five shot and wounded in alleged taxi violence

Police are investigating a case of attempted murder after a taxi owner and four others were shot and seriously wounded in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, on Thursday morning, police said.

Police spokesperson Captain Doniah Mothutsane said the Atteridgeville Saulsville Taxi Owners Association (ASTOA) went on a tour around 6.30pm to check if taxis operating in the area were members of the association, Rekord Centurion reported.

“It is alleged that a white Quantum taxi carrying an unknown number of suspects passed by ASTOA’s offices and suspects started shooting randomly,” she said.

Mothutsane said a taxi owner, three drivers and a passer-by were wounded.

“The victims were taken to Kalafong Hospital for treatment, and no one has been arrested,” Mothusane added.

A taxi driver, who asked not to be named, said the local taxi association did not want long distance taxis to operate in the area because they were “stealing” clients.

Mothutsane appealed to anyone with information on the matter to call the police on 08600-10111 or to sms Crime Line on 3221.

In a similar incident, a taxi owner, Ten Ten Ngiba, died at the Stanger Hospital after being shot in Stanger Manor, KwaDukuza in KwaZulu-Natal, yesterday morning.

Two of his security guards, known only as Dube and Petros Mkhize, were also wounded in the shooting.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said cases of attempted murder and murder would be opened for further investigation.
