Food poisoning suspected in deaths of toddlers

Police are awaiting postmortem results after two children died of alleged food poisoning while at crèche in Ivory Park, outside Midrand, Gauteng.

According to one of the children’s mother, the five-year-old girl and three-year-old boy died at the crèche due to suspected food poisoning from a meal they had eaten the night before, Midrand Reporter reported.

The mother said she had prepared food for lunch on February 15 and fed it to the children again the next morning.

She reportedly fell ill and called the crèche, where she was told the children had both been certified dead by paramedics.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela added the children died before eating any food prepared at the crèche.

An inquest docket was later opened by police.

In a separate incident, 18 pupils were admitted to hospital for food poisoning in Peddie, Eastern Cape, last week.

The provincial health department said the pupils from Pumla High School had experienced stomach cramps, headaches and vomiting after eating chocolates sold by a hawker.

The pupils were later taken to Nompumelelo Hospital for treatment.
