Four arrested for possession of stolen Sassa cards

Four suspected fraudsters have been arrested after they were found with a stack of stolen SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) cards in Pretoria, Gauteng.

Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said metro police officer stopped a vehicle driven in the oncoming traffic in Steve Biko Drive on Monday, Rekord Eastreported.

“The driver could not present his driver’s licence so he was pulled off the road. The vehicle was searched and officials found the suspected stolen Sassa cards linked to bank accounts with a collective credit of R40 500,” added Mahamba.

He said the men had already withdrawn a total of R7000 using the cards. The suspects were all arrested on Monday and are expected to appear in court soon.

This comes after Bronkhorstspruit police in Pretoria arrested four fraudsters with a large stack of bank cards and cash on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Sarah Mcira said police responded to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle in Church Street. When the officers approached the car, the driver sped away. The officers gave chase and managed to corner him at a service station.

“Police escorted the man back to the ATM where they found three other men,” added Mcira.

She said police found 70 bank cards with PIN codes and R11 880 in cash on suspects. All four suspects were arrested for fraud.
