Horrific R21 bus crash: At least 12 killed, major delays near airport

Emergency services are responding to a fatal bus crash on the R21 that left at least 12 dead and multiple injured, causing major traffic delays near the airport.

Emergency services remain on the scene of a horrific bus accident on the R21 in the East Rand, where at least 12 people were killed and dozens injured.

Pretoria Rekord reports that according to paramedics, the crash occurred just after 08:00. Emergency crews are still attending to entrapped passengers.

Vision Tactical posted on X that the crash has impacted traffic towards the airport.

“The lane heading to the airport is currently closed, and emergency services are attending to multiple patients. Motorists should expect major delays and consider alternative routes where possible. Please drive cautiously and allow extra travel time.”

Unconfirmed reports indicate that 14 people lost their lives.

Thus far, City of Ekurhuleni Disaster & Emergency Management Services spokesperson William Ntladi, in a video posted on Kempton Express‘ TikTok account, could only confirm the deaths of nine men and three women.

The newspaper reports that motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

Suggested alternative route:

  • Exit the R21 northbound at Griffiths Road.
  • Take Jet Park Road towards Pretoria Road.
  • Follow Pretoria Road towards Kempton Park.
  • Continue on Albatross Street to Voortrekker Road, where the R21 can be rejoined.

Road users are urged to exercise caution and patience.
