Husband attempts suicide after allegedly killing wife

A case of murder is under investigation after a 38-year-old woman was shot and killed allegedly by her husband in a family holiday flat on Meridian Drive, Umhlanga, in KwaZulu-Natal.

Durban North police spokesperson Lieutenant Raymond Deokaran said the woman, identified as a doctor from Umtata, was found dead at about 10am yesterday. Both her eyes were swollen, and she had bruises. A postmortem also revealed she had sustained a bullet wound to the head,Pheonix Sun reported.

“The husband had come down to Durban on a conference, and after receiving information that his wife had been with another man, he proceeded to their holiday flat in Umhlanga. We are not sure whether he caught them together, but there was an altercation.

“The husband then contacted his brother and told him that he had done something that he was ashamed of. The brother then contacted the police, who went to the holiday flat and found that the woman had been killed,” added Deokaran.

Provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the suspect, a municipal worker, made his way to the King Shaka International Airport in a bid to flee from his crime. He was discovered at the airport, where he then threatened to kill himself in view of all present,” added Zwane.

King Shaka International Airport spokesperson Collin Naidoo said: “We received a report about a man behaving erratically, and we called police.”

“I cannot comment further, as the matter is investigated by police,” added Naidoo.

Zwane said police and emergency workers on the scene were able to negotiate with the man, and he was arrested. The suspect was taken to Durban North Police Station for detention. He will be charged for murder and will appear in Verulam Magistrates’ Court soon,” he said.

In a separate incident, a 35-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his wife in Kagiso, Krugersdorp, in Gauteng in February. The suspect was arrested at his in-laws’ house in Kagiso Extension 1 after allegedly stabbing his wife to death.

Krugersdorp police spokesperson Constable Tshepiso Mashale said police were called to the scene, where they found the suspect and arrested him.
