Joburg woman ‘jumps’ to her death from hotel balcony

An inquest docket has been opened after a woman died when she allegedly jumped from a balcony of a hotel room near Hyde Park Corner shopping centre in Johannesburg.

Provincial police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said the woman went to the eighth floor of the Southern Sun hotel in Hyde Park and apparently jumped off the balcony of a room at about 11am yesterday, Rosebank Killarney Gazette reported.

Makhubela added the woman was certified dead on the scene. The reason behind the alleged jump remains unknown.

Priya Naidoo, general manager of group communications at Tsogo Sun, said: “We can confirm that the police are currently investigating the incident. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased.”

Investigations are ongoing.

In January, a teenager died after allegedly jumping out of a second-floor window at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the 14-year-old Sphephelo Sosibo was admitted to the hospital and placed in ICU on Christmas Eve following a car accident.

Wiid added a hospital employee allegedly saw the child sitting near the window. “When she tried to approach him, he jumped, sustaining serious injuries and died within minutes,” Wiid said.
