KZN launches Easter Road Safety campaign
Easter Road Safety Campaign to promote responsible road use over the long weekend.
A total of 1 279 vehicles were stopped and 30 drivers were charged for various transgressions during a multi-disciplinary roadblock at the Mariannhill Toll Plaza on the N3 on Wednesday.
The operation, led by KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala and MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Peggy Nkonyeni officially launched the Easter Road Safety Campaign to promote responsible road use over the long weekend.
This is as the province anticipates increased traffic volumes, with travels to work, leisure and pilgrims.
At the roadblock, officials inspected vehicle roadworthiness and checked adherence to Covid-19 travel regulations.
“What we want is to ensure that people follow all protocols of Covid-19, and ensure that road users follow the protocols and obey the rule of law,” said Zikalala.
Nkonyeni said they will be conducting various operations over the Easter weekend.
“We want to ensure that our road users are driving on our roads responsibly, that they avoid consumption of alcohol before arriving at their destinations.
“We are checking their speeds, and also want to ensure that drivers have a passenger list for long-distance travelling,” said MEC Nkonyeni.
