KZN man sentenced for speeding

A court in Scottburgh has given a motorist the option of paying a hefty fine or staying in jail for driving 172km/h.

The Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court recently handed down a R30 000 fine or an eight month prison sentence to Musa Trevor Mnguni for speeding, reports the South Coast Herald.

He was arrested in December by Park Rynie Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) for driving 172km/h in a 120km/h zone in the mid-South Coast area.

In addition to his sentence, Mnguni’s driver’s licence was suspended as per the execution of RTI’s #NenzaniLaEzweni operation.

The KZN Department of Transport has stated that through this driver’s licence suspension, it hopes to get a clear message across to all motorists that a driver’s licence is a legally granted privilege and not a constitutional right.

The department applauds the Park Rynie team, as well as the court, for its professionalism and the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development for managing cases effectively.
