Limpopo girl, 5, killed in shack fire
An inquest docket has been opened after a five-year-old girl was burnt to death inside a shack in Ga-Kgapane, Limpopo.
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, the child was asleep inside the shack when it caught fire on Saturday, presumably from a stove. The child’s mother was not present at the time, Letaba Herald reported.
“The police and firefighters were immediately summoned to the scene by community members and tried to rescue the burning child, with no success” said Ngoepe.
On Friday, cases of child neglect and an inquest docket were opened after the deaths of a five-year-old child and a 17-month-old baby who were trapped in a burning house in Krugersdorp, on Gauteng’s West Rand.
According to police, an officer passing by saw the blaze and immediately called the fire department. It is believed the children’s mother had locked them in the house before she left.
Both children were reportedly treated for smoke inhalation at Yusuf Dadoo Hospital, where they later died. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
