Man accused of stealing cellphone dies after mob attack in Gauteng

Two men were caught after they reportedly stole a cellphone. One of them was hit with a sjambok while the other one was shot in the foot.

Cases of attempted murder and murder are under investigation at Norkem Park SAPS following an alleged mob justice incident in Birch Acres, Kempton Park, in Gauteng.

According to Barbara-Anne Ferreira, the spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS, this follows an incident that took place in Ebony Street on Friday.

“It is alleged that two suspects had stolen a cellphone from someone before a community member grabbed one of the suspects and called for help. Soon a group of people had apprehended both of the suspects,” said Ferreira.

“On arrival, police found that the two suspects were injured. One of the suspects was severely assaulted, allegedly with a sjambok, while the other was shot three times in the foot.”

Ferreira said it is unknown at this stage who shot the suspect. Both suspects were transported to hospital.

“The suspect who was assaulted with a sjambok succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital on Monday,” Ferreira told Kempton Express.

“The other suspect is still in hospital and police have opened a docket for attempted murder and murder. The SAPS strongly condemns the community for taking the law into their own hands. Contact police on 10111 when needed or free from your cellphone on 112.”

Anyone with information about the incident that occurred on Friday, is urged to contact Norkem Park SAPS on 071 675 6803.
