Meyerton shooting: Stray bullet hits learner, parents panic

Parents rushed to collect their children from school as police responded to a shooting at a nearby taxi rank.

A high school learner from Hoërskool Dr. Malan in Meyerton, Gauteng, was injured after being hit by a stray bullet.

According to reports, the bullet first hit a cement slab, after which it bounced and hit the learner on the knee.

Sedibeng Ster reports that many parents gathered in front of the school this morning to pick up their children, fearing for their safety. They have since been reassured in a message from the school on WhatsApp.

“Everything is safe at Hoërskool Dr. Malan. The children are safe in their classes. Police are in control. We are continuing with school as normal. We will inform parents if there are any developments,” the message reads.

The shooting took place at the nearby taxi rank. At the time of publishing, police were still on the scene in Meyerton’s city centre.

When Vaalweekblad visited the scene, shell casings were strewn across Loch Street.

According to an eyewitness, who did not want to be named, the town centre was in chaos shortly after the shots rang out. “People started running and shops closed their doors.”

No arrests had been confirmed at the time of publishing.
