Microlight pilot seriously injured in KZN sugarcane field crash

A microlight pilot was seriously injured after crashing in sugarcane fields between Groutville Airfield and Palm Lakes Family Estate.

A microlight pilot was lucky to escape with his life after crash-landing in a sugarcane field yesterday morning.

According to The North Coast Courier, the man lost control of the microlight just before 08:00 and crashed in sugarcane fields between Groutville Airfield, near the Umvoti Toll, and Palm Lakes Family Estate.

Search and rescue teams were called by passing motorists who saw the incident from the N2.

“Multiple units were immediately dispatched, searching the sugarcane fields in an attempt to locate the microlight and pilot,” says IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Samantha Meyrick.

“Once located, the pilot was stabilised at the scene by IPSS Medical Rescue Advanced Life Support Paramedics, having sustained serious injuries. He has been transported to a suitable facility for further care.”
