One dead, two injured in KZN taxi shooting
A man has been shot and killed, and two others were critically injured after an apparent taxi shootout at Maphumulo Taxi Association in Stanger Manor, KwaDukuza in KwaZulu-Natal today.
IPSS Medical Rescue paramedic Paul Herbst confirmed one man was shot and killed in Primrose Street, while two others were critical from a gunshot wound to the head and leg respectively, North Coast Courier reported.
It was believed one of the injured was a taxi owner of the Maphumulo Taxi Association, and the other was a security guard.
The two were reportedly being treated at Stanger Hospital.
It was believed a second person had died, but this has yet to be confirmed.
The motive for the shooting remains unknown.
Last year, a dispute that allegedly involved taxi operators and drivers brought the Stanger CBD to a standstill, forcing police to close the main roads.
Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed there was “unrest” between the Maphumulo and KwaDukuza taxi associations.
“The two associations are arguing over the Maphumulo route,” added Zwane.
In a separate incident, a car passenger died, and the driver was wounded when they were caught in what was believed to be shootout between taxi bosses in Midrand, Gauteng in October.
A stray bullet had hit the passenger who died, and the driver of the car had been shot in the right arm, said Captain Augustinah Selepe.
The shooting had happened on the corner of the K101 and Le Roux roads in Midrand, added Selepe.
