Police officer allegedly bitten by taxi driver
A police officer has been bitten by a taxi driver during an alleged assault after the driver failed to produce his driver’s licence and public driving permit.
Police spokesperson Constable Tumisang Moloto said the police officer and his colleagues were on a routine patrol when they stopped a white taxi on the R511 and M26 roads in Erasmia, southwest of central Pretoria on Saturday morning, Rekord Centurion reported.
After the driver failed to produce the required documents, the police tried to arrest him, but he bit one of the officers, according to Moloto.
“The suspect resisted arrest and started assaulting the police officers,” said Moloto.
He said the driver was eventually taken to the police station.
The driver was scheduled to appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrates’ Court this week, where he would face several charges.
Scuffles involving taxi drivers and police officers continue to be reported.
In December, a Metro police officer was arrested for shooting dead a taxi driver in Naledi, Soweto.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department officer had pulled up alongside a taxi, which he felt was blocking the road, according to police.
The JMPD officer (32) allegedly shot the taxi driver (38) at around 8.30pm after being threatened with a screwdriver.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating the incident.
