Police vehicle used for ‘grocery shopping’

Police have launched an investigation after the emergence of images showing an improper use of an official police vehicle.

This comes after a Pretoria resident posted pictures of a police vehicle being used for shopping.

The car, seemingly belonging to the Gauteng Railway police, was used to transport groceries at the Bougainville Shopping Centre in Daspoort, Pretoria, last week.

The resident, Elma du Plessis, allegedly saw the vehicle and asked its occupants what was going on, Rekord Moot reported.

“As soon as I spoke to them and asked why they were using an official vehicle to go shopping, the two people, a man and a woman, became verbally abusive,” she said.

Du Plessis took photos of the car and posted them on social media. The images soon went viral.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-General Solomon Makgale said an immediate investigation into the use of the car had been launched.

“This is a very serious matter. It concerns us greatly,” Makgale said.

Makgale said the police members’ right to use an official vehicle had been withdrawn.

“We commend Ms Du Plessis for bringing this matter to our attention so that it can be investigated,” he added.

This comes after a woman posted a picture of herself on social media while drinking in what looked like a Metro police vehicle last month.

Ekurhuleni Metro police spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said details were still sketchy and that an investigation was under way.

He said police had only been able to communicate with the culprit through Facebook and were looking for her contact details.
