Rise in trauma fatality cases in Limpopo burdening health department

Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba has called on residents to act responsibly following a recorded increase in trauma related fatalities in the province.

Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba has expressed her concern over the increase of trauma-related fatalities in the province saying that this has placed an extra burden on the forensic pathology services to execute their duties.

Ramathuba explained that to date the province has exceeded the number of trauma cases as recorded last year. “In 2020 a total of 4 459 trauma cases were recorded, however this year, as of the December 14, the number has already risen to 5 091.”

According to the figures released the Capricorn district has recorded the most cases (1 964), followed by Vhembe at 937, Waterberg at 785, Mopani at 784 and Sekhukhune at 621. She added that the Pietersburg Hospital Forensic Pathology Services (FPS) unit has in the past weekend admitted 27 trauma cases for post-mortem.

“These cases were mostly alcohol related and include fatalities due to motor vehicle accidents (MVA), gunshot and stab wounds.

She said forensic pathologists and healthcare workers have been overwhelmed with the surge in cases and this has resulted in a delay in other services.

“Due to the 4th wave many of the workers have tested Covid-19 positive and need to isolate. This has resulted in healthcare workers having to tend to various sections in provincial hospitals.”

She added that the departments pathology teams are also trying their level best to execute their daily responsibilities such as the issuing of post-mortems.

Ramathuba called on residents to help the department reduce the number of trauma cases this festive season. “Be vigilant on the roads, drink and act responsibly.”

Our health remains our responsibility, she concluded.
