Shootout erupts as police close in on Nancefield murder suspects
A month-long murder investigation took a decisive turn when police traced a suspect to a scrapyard in Freedom Park.
Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder and hijacking of a 27-year-old woman whose body was found alongside a road in Nancefield in Soweto last month, reports the Soweto Urban.
The arrests followed an intelligence-driven operation in Freedom Park, Eldorado Park, yesterday (September 21) when police traced a 27-year-old suspect to a scrapyard at about 10:00.
The operation came nearly a month after the woman’s body was found alongside a road on August 24 with injuries to her upper body, prompting police to open cases of murder and hijacking.
According to police, the suspect allegedly fled when he saw officers and produced a firearm, resulting in a shoot-out in which he was wounded.
He was taken to hospital, where he remains under police guard.
Police recovered a .38 Special revolver with its serial number filed off, as well as one live round.
Further investigation led to the arrest of two more suspects, aged 35 and 36, in Freedom Park at about 19:45.
The victim’s vehicle has not yet been recovered.
The wounded suspect is expected to appear in court once he has recovered. He faces charges of murder, hijacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The two other suspects are also expected to appear in court.
Police investigations are continuing.
