Toddler’s body found after mother’s night at shebeen

A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder and possible kidnapping of a 14-month-old toddler in Ivory Park, east of Johannesburg.

This comes after the body of the toddler was found in an open veld in Rabie Ridge, in Tembisa, on Saturday morning. The girl had allegedly been reported missing by her mother on Friday,Kempton Express reported.

Kempton Park police spokesperson Captain Jethro Mtshali said the body of the little girl was found by a community member who was passing by the veld at about 6.30am and noticed the girl’s body.

“During investigations, it was established that the previous night (Friday) the mother of the girl had reported to Ivory Park police that a man had driven off with her daughter,” Mtshali added.

He said the girl’s mother had taken her child along while she drank at the pub with two men.

“Later, all three of them left the shebeen in a car, a metered taxi, belonging to the suspect. They first dropped one man at his home before proceeding to the woman’s home,” Mtshali said.

The mother and the suspect allegedly had an argument on the way and she exited the car. The suspect then sped off with the toddler still inside the car.

“At this stage it is not known how the child was killed, as the body has to be taken for a postmortem to establish the exact cause of death,” Mtshali said.

The suspect will appear in court today.

Earlier this year, a two-and-a-half-year-old boy was found dead on after he disappeared from Rooihuiskraal, in Centurion.

According to Wierdabrug Sector 3 chairperson Pierre Vivier, the toddler, Siphosihle Ntuli, was found drowned in a pond in the early hours of the morning of April 18.

“We received information from his parents around 04.30am, saying that he was found drowned on the premises where he was presumed to have disappeared from,” Viviers said.

The Centurion community launched a search party for the boy after he was last seen at a birthday party in Rooihuiskraal.
