Truck drives over cyclist in peak traffic (video)

A cyclist was killed when a truck apparently snagged his seat and pulled him underneath the vehicle on Thursday afternoon.

Hercules police station spokesperson Captain Lesiba Kopa said the man was killed on impact. The incident occurred at 17:33, the Pretoria North Rekord reported.

He said an investigation into the cause of the accident was underway and a case of culpable homicide was being investigated.

Several eyewitnesses said the driver of the truck claimed that he had tried to avoid colliding with another truck driving in the opposite lane on the narrow road. When he attempted to avoid the other truck he bumped the cyclist, who then landed under the wheels of the truck.

Video footage taken from a nearby business shows the cyclist driving on the side of the road when two trucks in opposite lanes drive past him. The accident then occurs off-camera behind a treeline.

Eyewitness accounts described the unfortunate scene as ‘extremely gruesome’.
