Update: Second suspect dies after KZN driver overpowers hijackers
A hijacking victim managed to grab a gun from one of the suspects and fired shots at them.
The second suspect who was shot during a botched hijacking, allegedly by the motorist they tried to hijack, died when he arrived at the hospital.
According to an article published by Southlands Sun, the hijacking victim was approached by the two suspects as he returned to his car after shopping in Solomon Mahlangu Drive in Clairwood, KZN, yesterday.
eThekwini District communication officer Captain Carmen Rhynes says one of the suspects was armed with a 9mm pistol.
“When [the victim] got into his car, one suspect approached him on the passenger side, while the other approached him from the driver’s side,” says Rhynes.
The victim tried to fight the suspect on the passenger side while the other suspect was assaulting him with the firearm.
“He then managed to grab the firearm [from the suspect] and shoot at both the suspects. The first suspect died at the scene, while the other died later the same day in the hospital,” says Rhynes.
The police recovered the suspects’ firearm at the scene with its serial number erased.
Rhynes says Brighton Beach police are investigating a case of attempted carjacking.
The police have not confirmed whether there will be any additional charges relating to the shooting.
