UPDATE: University of Zululand student stabbed over cold water named

An emotional video circulated by a student expressed the shock, horror and pain of those who witnessed the proceedings.

The Unizulu student who allegedly murdered his roommate with a kitchen knife on campus on Sunday afternoon, is fighting for his life in hospital after being attacked by fellow students, Zululand Observer reports.

Police have confirmed that the murdered man was a first year education student Nhlaka Sazi Ngubo (20) of Port Shepstone.

The two roomies apparently had an argument over cold water in their room at the eSiphetho Residence on the KwaDlangezwa campus at around 2pm.

The quarrel led to the perpetrator stabbing Ngubo and apparently slitting his throat.

Following the incident, the culprit was stoned by an angry mob of students and was transported to Ngwelezana Hospital where he is under police guard.

During the commotion, furious students also stoned a police car and damaged its windscreen.

Constable CK Mkhwanazi was injured during the chaos and is currently receiving treatment at Melomed Hospital in Empangeni.

 

Members of the university’s Protection Services Department saved the stabber from students seeking revenge and locked him in an office until police arrived.

Unizulu spokesperson Gcina Nhleko confirmed the incident, saying two students were involved in a stabbing incident in which one died and the other was injured, and that the university is investigating the matter.

The situation remains tense.
