Video: Manhunt for fugitive after Roodepoort cops killed in CBD

Police have launched a manhunt after two Roodepoort officers were fatally shot while transporting an accused back to prison from court.

Police are urging the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of Zimbabwean national Jabulani Moyo after a fatal shooting of two police officers in the Roodepoort CBD this morning.

According to Roodepoort Record, provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that a manhunt has been launched for the suspect, who is believed to have shot and killed the officers while they were transporting him back to prison from the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court after he appeared in connection with a 2023 business robbery.

Roodepoort Record earlier reported that, according to Masondo, one of the officers was based at Roodepoort Police Station and the other at Florida, and that they collected the suspect from a prison in Boksburg.

“The two police officers, a sergeant and a warrant officer, were shot at and disarmed. The sergeant was certified dead on the crime scene, while the warrant officer was taken to hospital, where he was certified dead on arrival.

“Moyo was seen driving the police vehicle that was later found abandoned a few kilometres from the crime scene.”

Police are appealing to anyone with information that can assist in the investigation or help in the apprehension of the suspect to contact the nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Information can also be given anonymously via the MySAPS app, which can be downloaded to any smartphone.

“We do not yet know if anyone else was involved in the shooting, but we can confirm that both officers’ firearms are missing,” Masondo said earlier.
