“I came to the scene just after 12pm after hearing of this issue. I networked with other community forums like the Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch,” Ragghianti said.

It is alleged the officers also assaulted the owner’s son in a back room and manhandled members of the neighbourhood watch.

Sophiatown Police spokesperson Warrant Officer TJ de Bruin said: “The metro officer followed the suspect to his office. He waited and knocked, but the suspect refused to open. The CPF was called, and the suspect was forced to open the door. The son and the suspect were then assaulted.”

Bruin added traffic lights and road signs were found in the suspect’s possession, but he was not arrested. Minnaar confirmed the assault and advised any misconduct to be reported to the JMPD’s Internal Affairs.
