Police are investigating a viral video of a young woman being assaulted, allegedly by a Ladysmith officer, during a tavern raid.

Ladysmith police are investigating a viral video, alledgedly involving officers operating in the Watermeet/Besters area.

According to Ladysmith Gazette, CCTV footage recorded on December 21 last year shortly before 18:00 shows a young woman being assaulted outside a tavern, allegedly by a female police officer.

Incident caught on camera

The incident reportedly occurred during a police raid on the tavern. In the footage, the woman is seen standing outside the premises carrying what appears to be beer.

The officer is then seen exiting the tavern and a woman being slapped several times, allegedly by the officer, causing her to drop some of the beers.

Police confirm investigation

Local police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan confirmed that the incident did take place and involved Ladysmith police officers. He added that the matter is under investigation.

Social media reaction divided

The video has drawn widespread reaction on social media, with opinion sharply divided.

Many viewers have sided with the female officer, who they believe was provoked, while others have voiced support for the young woman and are calling for legal action against the police.
