World Water Week: Halam’s Stockholm journey comes to an end

Her roommate from Canada walked away with the prize in the international competition aimed at 15- to 20-year-old participants.

The Stockholm Junior Water Prize awards ceremony at the Nora Latin was held last night with Canada crowned winner, signalling the end of the road for South Africa’s 16-year-old Unam Halam, who was one of the finalists.

Halam made sure South Africa’s flag was flying high at the Stockholm World Water Week, representing the country on the international stage with her and classmate Faith Classen’s Drop Saver project.

The ceremony was a landmark for both the Stockholm Junior Water Prize and the Stockholm World Water Week, as it was the first time that it was held as a hybrid between online and physical attendance.

Of the 36 countries that took part in this year’s competition, nine attended online while 27 attended the event physically, of which Grade 10 Heatherlands High School learner, Halam, was one.

The evening celebrated some of the brightest young minds from the world of water across the globe.
