Upholding road safety during the Easter season

As Easter approaches, the spotlight is once again on road safety, prompted by alarming statistics recently released by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).
According to the RTMC’s State of Road Safety Report in South Africa for January to December 2022, a staggering 12 436 lives were lost on our roads, with pedestrians accounting for 43% of the fatalities.
The Automobile Association emphasises the urgent need for robust traffic law enforcement to address this crisis, a sentiment echoed by Les Richardson, the vice chairperson of the Tyre, Equipment, Parts Association. He stresses the importance of fostering mutual tolerance among road users, including the growing number of delivery motorbike riders, influenced by the surge in online shopping options.
While motorcycle accidents may still be fewer than car accidents due to their lesser presence on roads, Richardson notes a shift in this trend, driven by rising vehicle running costs and the expansion of motorbike delivery services.
Regarding the upcoming Easter break, Richardson anticipates heightened law enforcement interventions. However, he cautions against relying solely on temporary measures, emphasising the need for a collective effort to cultivate a culture of respect for road rules throughout the year.
Central to this effort is combating the pervasive culture of impunity, where reckless behaviour like speeding, drunk driving and texting while driving remain rampant due to inadequate law enforcement. He urges against succumbing to peer pressure or adopting a herd mentality on the road, stressing the importance of individual responsibility and adherence to road rules for the safety of all.
